The Miracle of a Precipitous Birth — Trusting My Body Completely

There’s a beautiful word in Dutch — “stortbevalling” — which in English is called a precipitous birth. It means giving birth very quickly, usually within three hours from the start of active labor. Only about 2–3% of women experience it, and while it can feel intense or even surprising, it’s often a powerful reminder of how deeply our bodies know what to do.

A precipitous birth happens when the uterus contracts efficiently and the baby moves down the birth canal rapidly. For many women, it’s completely natural — the body simply takes over, instinctively doing what it’s made to do. Even though it may be unexpected, it can be an incredibly empowering and spiritual experience, showing just how strong and wise a woman’s body truly is.

My Story 🌿

The night before my baby was born, I slept a little uncomfortably — but nothing serious. I had no idea what was coming. I’d already had two beautiful water births before, so I thought I knew exactly how my body labored.

That morning, around 8 a.m., my midwife came to our home to check on me. She smiled gently and said, “It’s not labor yet — you’re around 4cm.” She left, and I went on with my morning as usual. I’d had a big bowl of creamy oatmeal, and my body was doing all the right things — even clearing itself naturally before birth.

After the midwife left, I went to sit in the living room with my mom, who was quietly reading a book. Suddenly, I felt something shift. I told her, “I feel something.”

I got on my birthing ball, bounced a few times, and said to my husband, “Call the midwife — I think the contractions are getting really serious.”

Everything happened so fast after that. I stood up, leaned against the changing table, and told my mom to take off my pants — I knew that feeling exactly. “He’s coming. He’s here.”

In that moment, I felt angels around me. It was powerful, raw, and breathtaking. My husband came in just in time to see our baby’s head emerge, and then, with one more wave, the rest of his tiny body followed — all in one beautiful motion.

The midwife didn’t make it in time, but I was calm. My body knew what to do. I birthed the placenta naturally, listening to my instincts, trusting every signal.

It was life-changing — a sacred reminder that the mind and body are designed to work together.
