Dumplings: In a large bowl whisk flour with salt, 2 1/2 tbsp sugar and lemon zest.

In a small bowl dissolve the dry yeast with milk and 1 tsp sugar. Pour it over the flour mixture. Add beaten egg, melted butter and vanilla extract and knead the dough until smooth, for about 5 minutes. Cover and let it rise at room temperature for about 1 hour until doubled in size.

On a floured surface divide dough into 5 or 6 pieces. Flatten each piece of dough using your hands and fill each with 1 tbsp of plum jam. Seal well and form each piece into a ball. Place dumplings onto a floured surface. Cover with cling film or a damp kitchen towel and let them rest for 20 to 30 minutes.

Vanilla sauce: In the meantime prepare your sauce. In a small saucepan whisk the egg yolk with sugar, cornstarch and vanilla extract. Whisk in the milk and cream and place over low-medium heat. Cook for about 5 to 7 minutes, stirring continuously until it starts to thicken. Simmer for 1 to 2 minutes. Do not boil. Remove from the heat and set aside.

In a small pot bring water (up to 5 cm) to a simmer. Use a greased steamer basket and place it in or over the pot. Transfer dumplings to the steamer basket, cover with a lid and let them steam for 15 to 18 minutes.

In a small bowl, combine ground poppy seeds and powdered sugar. This will be used for serving.

To serve: Serve dumplings immediately. Pour vanilla sauce over and top with the poppy seed mixture.
