A warm bowl of melkkos is pure comfort in every spoonful 🤍 This traditional South African dish, made from simple pantry staples, has been lovingly passed down through generations. I prepared it here in the cold Netherlands, and with the very first bite, it instantly wrapped me in the warmth of home 🇿🇦✨

Creamy, soft, and gently sweet, melkkos is the ultimate cozy food — the kind your mother or grandmother would make on a chilly evening. It fills the kitchen with the most nostalgic aroma and the heart with memories of family, laughter, and simpler times. Delicious, soothing, and deeply comforting, this bowl is more than just food… it’s a taste of home.

Method

In a mixing bowl, rub the butter into the flour and salt using your fingertips until crumbly like fine bread crumbs.

Bring the milk to a gentle boil in a medium sized pot.

Lower the heat and sprinkle the flour mixture into the milk while stirring continuously to prevent lumps.

Simmer on low heat for 15-20 minutes, stirring in between, until it thickens.

Spoon into bowls and sprinkle generously with cinnamon sugar and extra butter or ghee for that authentic, nostalgic taste.
